Improvements made to calculations for all mortality indicators sourced from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) Database.

State-level mortality rates now queried directly from the CDC WONDER database (instead of summarized from county-level data) to provide more accurate estimates. The previous method was affected by data suppression in some states, resulting in inaccurate figures.

Affected indicators:

  • Cancer Mortality
  • Heart Disease Mortality
  • Stroke Mortality
  • Suicide
  • Homicide

New maps and data now available for county-level health insurance indicators from the US Census Bureau’s Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) Program.

New data from the Census Bureau’s SAHIE program has been processed and released. New estimates compliment state and PUMA-level health insurance coverage estimates from the ACS (Indicator: Uninsured Population (Total). The county-level SAHIE data covers the entire US, but lacks detailed race and ethnicity estimates available through the ACS. Sampling and processing design differ between the two datasets; they should not be directly compared. New Indicators:

Social & Economic Factors

  • Uninsured Population (Adults)
  • Uninsured Population (Children)

New maps and data now available for four indicators from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). (CA Only)

Data for 2011-2012 acquired from the California Health Interview Survey AskCHIS query system (replacing data for 2009). Data breakouts by gender now available. (Select More Options > Show indicator data by groupings…). Affected indicators:

Clinical Care

  • Lack of Consistent Source of Primary Care

Health Behaviors

  • Fruit/Vegetable Consumption (Youth)

Health Outcomes

  • Heart Disease Prevalence
  • Poor Mental Health
