Population Change, 2018 by County, Population Estimates and Components of Change 2016-2018

The Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program (PEP) produces estimates of the population for the United States, its states, counties, cities, and towns, as well as for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and its municipios. Demographic components of population change (births, deaths, and migration) are produced at the national, state, and county levels of geography. Additionally, housing unit estimates are produced for the nation, states, and counties.

PEP annually utilizes current data on births, deaths, and migration to calculate population change since the most recent decennial census and produce a time series of estimates of population, demographic components of change, and housing units. The annual time series of estimates begins with the most recent decennial census data and extends to the vintage year.

National Land Cover Dataset

The National Land Cover Database (NLCD) serves as the definitive Landsat-based, 30-meter resolution, land cover database for the Nation. NLCD provides spatial reference and descriptive data for characteristics of the land surface such as thematic class (for example, urban, agriculture, and forest), percent impervious surface, and percent tree canopy cover. NLCD supports a wide variety of Federal, State, local, and nongovernmental applications that seek to assess ecosystem status and health, understand the spatial patterns of biodiversity, predict effects of climate change, and develop land management policy. NLCD products are created by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium, a partnership of Federal agencies led by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Power Plants

This feature class/shapefile represents electric power plants. Power plants are all the land and land rights, structures and improvements, boiler or reactor vessel equipment, engines and engine-driven generators, turbo generator units, accessory electric equipment, and miscellaneous power plant equipment are grouped together for each individual facility.

Electric Substations

This feature class/shapefile represents electric power substations primarily associated with electric power transmission. In this layer, substations are considered facilities and equipment that switch, transform, or regulate electric power at voltages equal to, or greater than, 69 kilovolts. Substations with a maximum operating voltage less than 69 kilovolts may be included, depending on the availability of authoritative sources, but coverage of these features should not be considered complete. The Substations feature class/shapefile includes taps, a location where power on a transmission line is tapped by another transmission line.

High-Speed Internet, Maximum Download Speeds

This layer displays the maximum advertised download speed available from fixed internet (DSL, cable, fiber, etc.) and terrestrial/fixed wireless internet providers. Data are from the August, 2019 release of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Fixed Broadband Deployment Dataset and reflect conditions as of June 2018. Data are reported by census block (centroid).

Access to Fiber Internet

This layer displays the percentage of population with access to fiber internet. Data are from the August, 2019 release of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Fixed Broadband Deployment Dataset and reflect conditions as of June 2018. Data are available by county, census tract, and census block group. Values are population-weighted; caculations do not include cellular internet providers.

Toxic Release Inventory by County

This layer displays the amount of toxic releases based on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), a national program which tracks the management of over 650 toxic chemicals that pose a threat to human health and the environment. Facilities must report how each chemical is managed through recycling, energy recovery, treatment, and releases to the environment. A “release” of a chemical means that it is emitted to the air or water, or placed in some type of land disposal. The information submitted by facilities to the EPA and states is compiled annually as the Toxics Release Inventory or TRI, and is stored in a publicly accessible database ( Envirofacts. Statistics of Income from the IRS

Layers display ZIP code and county-level information about tax returns filed in 2016, including the number and percentage of returns claiming Earned Income Tax Credits. Data is acquired through the IRS IRS County Data.

Tree Canopy Areas

This layer shows the percentage of land area covered by tree canopy based on data from the 2016 The National Land Cover Database (NLCD) Percent Tree Canopy Collection. The NLCD tree canopy imagery is a product of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and is produced through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium (www.mrlc.gov). Tree canopy values range from 0 to 100 percent.

In order to generate percent tree canopy values for census geographies, the NLCD 2016 Percent Tree Canopy Analytical Dataset was processed using ESRI Zonal Statistics tools. Zones were based on US Census Block Group boundaries from the ESRI Map Data pack for ArcGIS 10.6. These figures were aggregated and mapped at the census block group, census tract and county levels. Census tract and county figures are also available as population weighted percentages based on 2010 Decennial Census figures.
