New 5-year mortality rates for 2019-2023 are now available (replacing data for 2018-2022). Death counts were downloaded from the CDC WONDER query system. Total rates and race/ethnicity or gender statistics are reported for US counties and states with 10 or more deaths over the report period. Affected indicators:

The 2022 data on adult smoking rates are now available. This indicator reports the percentage of adults who report smoking cigarettes every day or on most days. Data were sourced from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and are used in the 2025 County Health Rankings.

New maps and data now available for the Drug Overdose Deaths indicator from the 2025 County Health Rankings.
The 2020–2022 data on drug overdose deaths are now available. This indicator reports the three-year average rate of death due to drug overdose per 100,000 population, based on county-level data and summarized for report areas in the 2025 County Health Rankings. Deaths are counted by county of residence, and data are suppressed for counties with fewer than 10 drug poisoning deaths in the time period.

New data now available for the Reading Scores indicator from the 2025 County Health Rankings.
The latest data on 3rd grade English Language Arts (ELA) performance are now available. This indicator reports the average grade-level performance of 3rd graders on standardized ELA tests, where a score of 3.5 means students are performing half a grade level above expectations. This measure highlights early academic achievement in literacy, a key predictor of long-term educational success.
