Public Education Expenditures

This layer data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data (CCD) School District Finance Survey. The survey provides finance data for all local education agencies (LEAs) that provide free public elementary and secondary education in the United States. County-level data was generated by CARES by aggregating school-district level records with valid reported figures for total students and total expenditures.

Maximum Temperature – Average Days Above 100 Degrees

This updated dataset reports the total number of days in which an extreme heat event was above 100 degrees between 2019-2021 at the county level. Data were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (EPHTN).

Gross Domestic Product

This layer displays the 2020 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) produced within each U.S. county and the percent change in GDP from the previous year. GDP is the monetary value of all the goods and service produced within a county and is a measure of economic activity. The growth rate of GDP is the most popular indicator of overall economic health.

Heat Index – Average Days Above 98th Percentile

This updated dataset reports the total number of days in which an extreme heat event was above the 98th percentile between 2019-2021 at the county level. Data were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (EPHTN).

School Funding Adequacy

This layer displays the average gap in dollars between actual and required spending per pupil among public school districts. Required spending is an estimate of dollars needed to achieve U.S. average test scores in each district.

EJ Screen Air Toxic Cancer Risk

The air toxics cancer risk indicator is the estimated lifetime inhalation cancer risk from the analyzed
carcinogens in ambient outdoor air, as provided by the 2017 Air Toxics data Update. The value of the
indicator is persons per million lifetime. The data is reported at the Census tract level. Block group level
values are assigned by repeating each parent tract level value.

This layer displays the 2021 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) produced within each U.S. county and the percent change in GDP from the previous year. EJ Screen Diesel Particulate Matter

The Diesel PM indicator is the estimated concentration of Diesel PM as provided by the 2017 Air Toxics
update. The value of the indicator is in µg /m3
