This layer displays the locations of regulated facilities that discharge pollutants into surface waters in the United States. Location and environmental characteristics about facilities requiring discharge permits is contained in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Facilities requiring permits include industrial, municipal, and other facilities must obtain permits if their discharges go directly to surface waters (via discrete conveyances such as pipes or man-made ditches). Individual homes that are connected to a municipal system are not reported to the EPA. For more information, please visit the EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System web page.
Toxic Release Inventory by County
This layer displays the amount of toxic releases based on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), a national program which tracks the management of over 650 toxic chemicals that pose a threat to human health and the environment. Facilities must report how each chemical is managed through recycling, energy recovery, treatment, and releases to the environment. A “release” of a chemical means that it is emitted to the air or water, or placed in some type of land disposal. The information submitted by facilities to the EPA and states is compiled annually as the Toxics Release Inventory or TRI, and is stored in a publicly accessible database ( Envirofacts. For more information, please visit the EPA Toxics Release Inventory web page.
Statistics of U.S. Businesses
These data include number of establishments and corresponding employment change for births, deaths, expansions, and contractions from 2015 to 2016. The data are presented by geographic area, industry, and enterprise employment size.
Fatal Motor Vehicle Crashes by County, 2014-2018
This layer displays the number and rate of fatalities from motor vehicle crashes ccurring between 2014 and 2018, aggregated by county. Unlike typical mortality data, this data layer represents the location of the fatal crash, and not the county of the decedent’s residence.
Fatal Motor Vehicle Crashes Involving Alcohol, 2014-2018
This layer displays the number and percentage of fatal vehicle crashes involving alcohol occurring between 2014 and 2018. Data are aggregated by county of occurrance.
Safe Drinking Water Information System Sites
This layer displays the locations of a subset of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) sites. The SDWIS contains information about public water systems and their violations of EPA’s drinking water regulations. Data can be accessed through the EPA’s Clip N Ship map application. For more information, please visit the Safe Drinking Water Information System web page.
Air Quality System Sites
This layer displays the locations of air quality monitoring stations in the United States. The Air Quality System (AQS) contains ambient air pollution data collected by EPA, state, Local, and tribal air pollution control agencies from thousands of monitoring stations. AQS also contains meteorological data, descriptive information about each monitoring station (including its geographic location and its operator), and data quality assurance/quality control information. For more information, please visit the EPA Air Quality System web page.
Head Start Facilities
This layer displays locations of Head Start facilites in the United States. The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) identifies head start facilities as either a center, an early childhood center, a seasonal / migrant center, or any combination of these designations.
Access to High-Speed Internet
This layer displays the percentage of population with access to broadband internet. Data are from the August, 2019 release of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Fixed Broadband Deployment Dataset and reflect conditions as of June 2018. Data are available by county, census tract, and census block group. Values are population-weighted; calculations do not include cellular internet providers.
