Internet Usage at Broadband Speeds

This layer displays the percent of people who use the internet at broadband speeds (Greater than 25 MBPS download speed). Data is derived from the Microsoft data science and analytics team, using anonymized user data and aggregated to the county level. State level averages were calculated by CARES using county averages weighted by population.

Residential Vacancies – 2020 Q4

This layer displays residential vacancy rates and total residential vacancies in census tracts across the United States. Vacancy rates are reported quarterly.

Hydrography – Rivers & Streams

Hydrography depicts surface water, including rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, canals, coastlines, and many other water features. The Hydrography layer combines two data sets: the 2021 National Map Hydrographic Geodatabase (1:1,000,000 scale) for small to medium scales, and the 2016 National Hydrography Datataset (NHD) (1:24,000 scale) for large scale mapping. Hydrography is depicted in two layers. Rivers & Streams depicts linear hydrography, including rivers, streams, canals, pipes, and artificial paths (line networks through larger water bodies). Waterbodies includes area hydrography, including larger rivers, lakes, ponds, seas, bays, estuaries, etc.

Heart Attack Hospitalizations by County, 2016-18

Tobacco Product Compliance Check Violations Involving Minors

This layer displays information obtained from analysis of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Compliance Check Inspections of Tobacco Product Retailers database. This database contains address-level records for each retailer inspection – including decision date, violation type, and tobacco product type – dating back to 2011. These address-level records are geocoded and aggregated to the county level for multi-year periods* based on the inspection result decision date. Percentages are calculated by dividing the number of inspections with violations (any or minor-related) by the total number inspections in a given area and reporting period.

Note: Multi-year periods are used to enable stable comparisons over time, as some counties have no inspections during a single reporting year.

Socioeconomic Status Vulnerability

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), or CDC/ATSDR SVI, is a database that helps emergency response planners and public health officials identify, map, and plan support for communities that will most likely need support before, during, and after a public health emergency.
CDC/ATSDR and the HHS Office of Minority Health developed the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (Minority Health SVI) to enhance existing resources to support the identification of racial and ethnic minority communities at the greatest risk for disproportionate impact and adverse outcomes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Minority Health SVI is an extension of the CDC/ATSDR SVI that includes additional variables for race, ethnicity, language, medical vulnerability, and health care infrastructure. The Minority Health SVI is grouped into six themes: Socioeconomic Status, Household Composition and Disability, Minority Status and Language, Housing Type and Transportation, Health Care Infrastructure, and Medical Vulnerability. Each theme has a percentile ranking represented as a value between 0 (least vulnerable) and 1 (most vulnerable). An Overall Percentile Ranking combines these themes.
