Area Deprivation Index by Census Block Group

The 2019 Area Deprivation Index is now available! The ADI map displays rankings of neighborhoods by socioeconomic status disadvantage in a region of interest (e.g. at the state or national level). It includes factors for the theoretical domains of income, education, employment, and housing quality. It can be used to inform health delivery and policy, especially for the most disadvantaged neighborhood groups. The 2019 ADI was constructed using the 2015-2019 5-year estimates from the US Census’ American Community Survey.

Change in Area Deprivation Index Scores (2015 to 2019) by Census Block Group

This map layer displays the change (+/-) in Area Deprivation Index (ADI) scores between the 2015 and 2019 datasets. The ADI is a rankings of neighborhoods by socioeconomic status disadvantage in a region of interest (e.g. at the state or national level). It includes factors for the theoretical domains of income, education, employment, and housing quality. It can be used to inform health delivery and policy, especially for the most disadvantaged neighborhood groups. The 2015 ADI (v2.0) was constructed using the 2011-2015 5-year estimates from the US Census’ American Community Survey (ACS); the 2019 ADI uses 2015-2019 5-year estimates from the ACS.

Food Desert Census Tracts, 2019

This layer displays the location of Food Deserts across the United States based on conditions in 2015. The Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) Working Group considers a food desert as a low-income census tract where a substantial number or share of residents has low access to a supermarket or large grocery store.

Influenza Vaccination Rate by County

This layer displays immunization rates for seasonal influenza among adults aged 18 and older. Data are from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) FluVaxView data portal. The county-level estimates within FluVaxView are derived from responses to the 2018 and 2019 BRFSS.

School Shootings

This layer displays the location of school shootings across the country. Shootings are categorized by the situation and the size varies by the number of victims.

National Walkability Index

The National Walkability Index is a nationwide geographic data resource that ranks block groups according to their relative walkability. The national dataset includes walkability scores for all block groups as well as the underlying attributes that are used to rank the block groups.

Income from Transfer Payments

Layer displays information about personal income from transfer payments from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Local Area Personal Income data series. In personal income, transfer receipts are benefits received by persons for which no current services are performed. They are payments by government and business to individuals and non-profit institutions. Specifically, transfer payment income encompasses all receipts from:

  • Retirement and disability;
  • Medical benefits;
  • Income maintenance benefits (SSI, EITC, SNAP, etc.);
  • Unemployment;
  • Veterans’ benefits;
  • Education and training assistance;
  • Other government benefits;
  • Payments from businesses

Heart Disease Hospitalizations by County, 2016-18

This layer displays the rate hospitalization for patients with an initial hospital admission for coronary heart disease. Data are reported at the county level for the 2016-18 three-year period. Data are obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Interactive Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke.
