Food Insecurity Rate by County, 2013

Layer displays updated food insecurity rates for US counties. Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Data is from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap program, which estimates food insecurity using 2009-13 data.

Percent Students Eligible for Free or Reduced Price Lunch

This layer displays information about free and reduced price lunch eligibility among public school students. This point-level data is acquired from the 2012-2013 National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data (CCD).

Fast Food Restaurant Rates by County, 2014

This layer displays rates and counts of fast food and limited-service eating establishments in counties across the United States. Establishment counts are acquired from the 2014 County Business Patterns, released by the US Census Bureau in May 2016. This layer displays the percentage of household income a family earning 50% of area median income (AMI) might pay on housing and/or transportation costs. Data is from the Location Affordability Index (LAI) Version 2, which estimates these costs at the neighborhood level for all populated areas across the United States.

Households Receiving SNAP Benefits, Disparity Index Score

Layer displays information about racial disparity of poverty using data from the 2010-2014 American Community Survey (ACS). The Index of Disparity (ID) is used to show the magnitude of variation in indicator percentages across population groups. In this case, the index measures the difference in the percentage of the households receiving SNAP benefits across four racial and ethnic groups.
