Food Desert Census Tracts, 2019

This layer displays the location of Food Deserts across the United States based on conditions in 2015. The Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) Working Group considers a food desert as a low-income census tract where a substantial number or share of residents has low access to a supermarket or large grocery store.

Income from Transfer Payments

Layer displays information about personal income from transfer payments from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Local Area Personal Income data series. In personal income, transfer receipts are benefits received by persons for which no current services are performed. They are payments by government and business to individuals and non-profit institutions. Specifically, transfer payment income encompasses all receipts from:

  • Retirement and disability;
  • Medical benefits;
  • Income maintenance benefits (SSI, EITC, SNAP, etc.);
  • Unemployment;
  • Veterans’ benefits;
  • Education and training assistance;
  • Other government benefits;
  • Payments from businesses

Residential Vacancies – 2021 Q4

This layer displays residential vacancy rates and total residential vacancies in census tracts across the United States. Vacancy rates are reported quarterly.

Business Vacancies – 2021 Q4

This layer displays business vacancy rates and total business vacancies in census tracts across the United States. Vacancy rates are reported quarterly.

Rural Hospital Closures

This layer displays the location of hospitals that no longer provide in-patient care in rural settings since 2005. Hospitals may have closed completely or converted to provide some other healthcare services.

Change in Resident Population

This layer displays percent change in resident population for the 50 states, the Discrict of Columbia and Puerto Rico from 2010 to 2020. This data was released as part of the decennial census in April 2020. For more information visis the Census.gov website here.

Tax Returns Claiming Earned Income Tax Credits

This layer displays information about tax credits and tax deductions claimed by tax filers. Information is available for all ZIP codes and counties where 10 or more total tax returns were filed. Eligible tax payers may receive between $1 and over $5,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC).

Food Insecurity, 2018

This layer displays information about the prevalence of food insecurity by County, throughout the United States. This data is acquired from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap hunger study. Data are estimates generated by Feeding America, using inputs from multiple data sources, including the Current Population Survey (CPS), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and the American Community Survey (ACS).
