Average measures of income are calculated as the total proprietor income of an area divided by the estimated number of proprietors within the area. Percentages are calculated by dividing the estimated proprietor employment by the total employment in an area. Information used in this map layer is acquired from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Economic Accounts: Economic Profile (CA30).

Establishment counts are acquired from the 2016 County Business Patterns, released by the US Census Bureau in April and May 2018. This series includes the number of establishments, employment during the week of March 12, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll. This data is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for other statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Businesses use the data for analyzing market potential, measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs, setting sales quotas, and developing budgets. Government agencies use the data for administration and planning.
